2015 WTA Predictions: How did Moo’s Tennis Blog do?

Before I post my latest set of predictions for the 2016 tennis season (i’m still not ready yet) here’s a look back at how my predictions fared for 2015. On the whole, it wasn’t too bad! I correctly predicted seven of the world’s top ten, incorrectly going for Wozniacki, Azarenka and Ivanovic. I was all-in on Caroline after her tremendous end to the 2014 season, but it never happened for the Dane. The two new names I predicted for the top ten both made it… Safarova and Muguruza. Here’s a selection of some quotes from my predictions post last year and how my judgments stacked up against reality.

I think Serena will win one or two Slams in 2015 with the US Open and the French Open being her best opportunities at improving her current tally of 18.

I thought Serena would end the year as world number one but never did I think she would be just two wins away from the Calendar Slam.

If Wozniacki can continue to produce performances like she did in Singapore (in 2014), I honestly believe she can win a Grand Slam in 2015.

Oh dear.

I’d also fancy Sharapova to make at least one Grand Slam final in 2015…

Yes… Sharapova reached the final of the Australian Open back in January.

I fully expect Halep to maintain her position in the top five.  Her best results in 2014 came on the clay and I’d back Halep to go all the way at Roland Garros.

Halep really struggled during this year’s clay court season. After reaching the final of Roland Garros in 2014, she lost in the second round to Mirjana Lucic-Baroni.

I’d fancy Ivanovic to qualify for the WTA Championships once again…

Eeeek. Like Caro, it wasn’t a great year for Ana in 2015 and injuries certainly didn’t help.

I’ve got a good feeling about Garbiñe in 2015…

Yesss I was right to have a good feeling about Garbiñe! I definitely didn’t expect her to crack the top three though.

I had to restrain myself from putting Belinda in my top ten. She made such big moves on the tour in 2014 that I feel she is capable of making big leaps once again.  However, I think we are one year away from Bencic making her “big” breakthrough.

One year on, i’d stand by this. Bencic continues to make notable strides up the rankings and I think she will have a super 2016.

Grass will be an exciting stage of the season for Keys and I believe if the draw gods are kind, she can make a very deep run at Wimbledon.

Keys took advantage of a favourable draw to reach the quarter-finals of Wimbledon. It was interesting listening to the latest episode of the WTA Insider podcast where Madison remarked that she was proud of her efforts at SW19, toughing out matches whilst not playing at her best.

I’ve got high hopes for Taylor Townsend and hopefully we’ll get to see her more prominently on the WTA tour in 2015…

Oh jeepers. I was all in for Taylor but it hasn’t happened yet with injuries derailing her year. Andddddd let’s sweep it under the carpet that I had Shelby Rogers cracking the top 40…

  1. Nice post, James! I like it how you compared the predictions by using the quotes. You could’ve also mentioned that you were among the best predictors in my blog’s contest! 🙂

  2. Yeah, I think you were pretty accurate this year! I also looked back on my top 10 predictions I made on your prediction, and I have Venus at #10, but never did I dream she’d be #7! How insane
