French Open Day 6, R3 Match Preview: Maria Sharapova v Sam Stosur

StosurA blockbuster third round match is set for Roland Garros on day 6 as Maria Sharapova will face her first significant test of the fortnight against the in-form, Sam Stosur. Generally speaking, the Aussie has had a disappointing year; through the first eight tournaments of the year, Stosur failed to win back-to-back matches. Fortunes changed during the clay court season as she reached the third round in Madrid and then had a confidence boosting run in Strasbourg where she was crowned champion. Stosur won four matches, of which three were in three sets. Stosur has sailed through her first two matches at Roland Garros, beating Madison Brengle (6-1 6-3) and Amandine Hesse (6-0 6-1). Stosur is now on a six match winning streak and arrives into this match with newly defined confidence. It would seem that working again with former coach, Dave Taylor has been a positive move although Stosur has always performed well at Roland Garros.

Sharapova hasn’t dropped a set through her first two matches; she beat Kaia Kanepi, 6-2 6-4 in the first round and followed that up with a 6-3 6-1 victory over Vitalia Diatchenko in the second round. The Russian player looked under the weather in her opener and will need to be on her game against Stosur. Sharapova leads the head-to-head 14-2 although Stosur’s two victories have come in their last seven matches. The last time they played was at Roland Garros last year in the fourth round. Stosur had Sharapova on the ropes, but Maria eeked out the second set and blasted through in a superb third set performance to win, 3-6 6-4 6-0. Stosur has game to trouble Sharapova and this surface suits her game perfectly. All the matches she has played in the past week will help her for this one. I’d just question whether she has what it takes mentally to tumble the defending champion. I’m expecting a gripping match with Maria surviving a battle.

Prediction: Sharapova d. Stosur in 3 sets

  1. I’m quite confident of the upset here, even though I’m a Sharapova fan. As so many of my other predictions have gone wrong surely one of them must be right! So for that reason I’m sticking by my original prediction of Stosur in 3 sets.

  2. As a Maria fan I’m very nervous about tomorrow. Stosur is playing well and Maria is suffering with a cold. Stosur is a tough opponent on clay and I think she will win tomorrow in 3 even though I’m hoping for a Sharapova win.

  3. I’ve been praying that Maria gets better, and I was worried about tomorrow. I don’t know if it will be in straight sets or in 3, but I have faith that Maria will pull it off.

  4. I think everyone is aware of Maria drop shots now. It is not an easy match but I think Maria will prevail. It will in two I think Stosur chokes.

  5. I’ve been pretty gobsmacked by this sudden return to form from Stosur. And I have watched both Sharapova matches this week and felt she has a lot of holes in her game right now. Stosur was up a set and a break last year against her, if I remember correct, but she had one of the meltdowns of the year. If she can hold her nerve then she could definitely take this.

    • Yes I remember watching that match last year. Sharapova played well in the decider but Stosur completely went away after losing it from a winning position in the second set. Sam will have chances and I agree, it comes down to whether she can hold her nerve.

  6. What has impressed me most with Stosur is her bhand has been on ‘song’ especially in her last match, against Maria it has to be on ‘song’ all match, also I want to see Stosur mix up her serve,a body serve especially, which will cramp Sharapova.Stosur has a good kick serve, though Maria has a great wing span and can return it,I also want to see Stosur attack wide Sharapova’s fhand wing, this is where Stosur can get errors,Sharapova dosent slide as well on her fhand wing.Stosur has to ‘believe’…I am going for a upset win,Stosur in 3 sets.
